Veteran UK broadcaster Sir Michael Parkinson dies at age 88

A statement from Parkinson's family said he died after a brief illness on Wednesday.

also affectionately known as Parky,  presented his television talk show Parkinson from 1971 to 1982,  and again from 1998 to 2007.

He was also known for his international talk shows, including Parkinson in Australia. Parkinson was made a CBE in 2000 and knighted in 2008.

"I never expected to be knighted — I thought there was more chance of me turning into a Martian, really," he said of the accolade.

Parkinson's high-profile guests included Sir Billy Connolly, Muhammad Ali, Sir Elton John, Madonna and Dame Helen Mirren.

Among his famous Australian interviews, Parkinson chatted with former prime minister Bob Hawke, Dame Edna Everage and Olivia Newton-John.

He was also attacked by an emu while interviewing Rod Hull. "It's daft isn't it," he said, chatting to Leigh Sales on 7.30 in 2019.
